Sofian Jouini

Sofian Jouini is a choreographer, dancer, actor, and artistic director of La 37e Chambre.
Born in 1985 to a French mother and a Tunisian father, Sofian Jouini spent his early years in Tunis before returning to France with his parents. The couple settled between Nantes and Paris. Sofian is passionate about his pets, the sea, and South American authors such as García Márquez, Álvaro Mutis, and Francisco Coloane. He has played tennis, judo, rink hockey, volleyball, and scuba diving, and of course, a bit of soccer. At age fifteen, he discovered dance by following in his older brother’s footsteps. Trained in hip hop dance, he has created several pieces on his own, as part of a collective, or in duets.
His practice serves as a vessel for his life experiences and journey; it incorporates writing, bicultural and multicultural influences, floor work, theatricality, and formal exploration, as well as human and animal mobility and a certain secular sacredness. For him, the process of exploration and the sharing of that process must not be overshadowed by the final artistic product; he conceives of physical practice as a space where different sciences and arts intersect through the imagination and the senses.
His first show, Natures (2019), was created in response to the growing alienation from physical mobility in people’s daily lives, the trend toward a sedentary lifestyle, and the extreme rationalization of lifestyles.
Jedeya, his second piece, created in 2022, takes us on a journey through time, where stories of life brought to life invite us to reflect on our cultural heritage across generations and genders.
His latest work La Visite premiered in 2025 at the CCN de Rennes et de Bretagne.
