Candice Martel

In her work, Candice Martel explores themes such as the status of women around the world and social and societal determinism. She is a versatile and passionate artist, recognized for her talent and creativity.
She began her training in classical ballet and tap dance in Geneva, Switzerland, and was discovered by the prestigious Grand Théâtre de Genève at the age of 16. Candice has always had a strong interest in dance and tap, which led her to New York. There, she had the opportunity to meet renowned tap dancers such as Savion Glover, Jimmy Slide, Buster Brown, and Gregory Hines, which greatly influenced her career and helped her refine her technique and unique style. Candice has performed in musicals in Germany, Belgium, and France, collaborating with choreographer Redha Benteifour. In the early 2000s, she adopted a more contemporary approach, exploring new forms of artistic expression.
Candice is not only a talented dancer but also a multifaceted artist. In addition to dance, her rebellious spirit and her commitment to advocating for women led her to create, in 2019, a transdisciplinary documentary dance video library titled Being Born a Girl, which has earned her several awards, including winning the “Et pourtant elles tournent” competition organized by Arte.
“Being Born a Girl” is a series of video portraits of women and/or men that, in five minutes, examine the status of women at a given moment in their respective countries, while weaving their personal stories together with artistic expression and expert analysis.
In 2022, Candice teamed up with Yannick Thomas, Julie Gilbert, and Mattis Schaeffer to create L’invisible spectacle de toutes ces vies empêchées (The Invisible Spectacle of All These Thwarted Lives), a performance that explores the themes of invisibility and thwarted lives through an artistic approach blending circus and dance—a form designed and created for the street.
Candice is currently preparing an electro-tap production in collaboration with the talented musician and composer Mikaël Charry, also known as MODGEIST. Mikaël, who is the founder and composer of the Anakronic Electro Orkestra—a leading group in the electro-klezmer scene with five albums to its credit and more than 500 concerts—brings a unique dimension to this new production.
