With this new work, she explores the history of a hidden violence and challenges a twofold denial: that which erases the animal behind the meat we consume, and that which cuts us off from our own animality. We have artificially separated farm animals from humans and domestic animals, in order to better exploit the former. What if the performance were to rekindle the kinship between our animal bodies and unleash the utopian power of the stage? Other worlds already exist; Becoming a Refuge invites us to connect with them and to dream of interspecies communities, here and now. Accompanied by Walid Ben Selim, a poet and singer, she brings together a host of flamboyant figures, whose voices have carried melodies that have stood the test of time. These tunes are both familiar fixtures – gems of popular culture constantly in circulation – and intimate markers, an intangible heritage embedded in our memories and personal histories.
