Elamine Maecha

Graphic designer, typographer, and researcher; teaches at the École Supérieure d’Art de Lorraine. Elamine studied at ENSAD, the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) in Boston. After graduating, he became a researcher at the ANRT (Atelier National de Recherche Typographique) in Nancy, founded in 1985 to breathe new life into typographic design. As part of BURO-GDS, he designed the visual identities for some of France’s most prestigious cultural institutions, publishing houses, and galleries. Together with the FAIR-E Collective, he shares a common desire to deconstruct a certain outdated and stereotypical graphic representation of hip hop in order to open it up to new horizons, reflecting the diversity of aesthetics that underpin this culture today. In 2019, he designed the graphic identity for the CCN in Rennes and Brittany, along with its custom typeface and the signage for the Le Garage and Saint-Melaine venues, which pay tribute to several pioneers of hip-hop dance in France.
